     Modern industry started in the form of small scale units in the beginning of the last century. Sennar cement factory is considered as the first factory that was established in the 20th to supply the demand of Sennar damp and it was closed immediately after the establishment of the damp in 1925.

 

 

 

 Local manufacturing became more active during the Second World War to meet the local consumption needs instead of importing these goods from outside the country such as edible oil, soap and sweets. Also the manufacturing of Military supplies such as ready made clothes has been activated. but all this industries was ignored after war and they return to import this goods from outside the country.

The establishment of the Meat Factory in 1945 which was considered as the first one from its kind in the country but the factory was closed after a short time from starting of production a because of scarcely of the raw materials.

The Atbara Portland Cement Factory was established by an English company in 1948.

  The period after the independence witnessed the emerging of Small and medium scale industries (light industries) such as Cigarette, glass, palate, mineral water, sweets and soap. These factories were built by some foreign communities Syrian,, Armenian, Greek

At that time the industrial sector didn't have an essential contribution in GDP.
